Entrepreneurs seek advice and connections during Twin Cities Startup Week

Each year, Beta hosts Twin Cities Startup Week, an annual week-long series of seminars, discussions, demos and networking events designed to continue to grow the region’s startup ecosystem.

This week, thousands of entrepreneurs, investors, academics and business leaders will attend events in the Twin Cities designed to help them grow and fund their businesses, change their work culture or simply to improve the subway technology and innovation industry.

We asked some attendees what they hoped to learn this week and why they were attending Startup Week. Read or listen to their responses below.

Derek RuckerSt. Paul

Technical Director, StoryForge; angel investor

“I’m a tech guy, a data guy. I’m a lot more comfortable with code and the tails side of things, but my startup is in dire need of marketing and PR. We need of creatives and we need the development of a community. I don’t know how to do these things, and neither does my daughter who is the CEO. So while we can create the platform for creatives to improve their production and improve their art, I can’t get the word out, not on my own, I need to find people who can help me and are willing to help me.

“I’m primed right now. I’m interested in grants and loans and other government stuff, but it’s all very vague and confusing to me. There are a few sessions on that and a few other sessions on the how to be a booted founder and how it’s different from VC run businesses VC things are so loud and noisy I need a bit of background on how to do it as I wish.

Really just open to meeting a lot of new people and making connections.”

“I have this vision to protect and preserve the sport experience of our young athletes and I also know that our young athletes cannot afford or are not going to pay for these types of services. For me, it depends on the leaders of these sports organizations to be willing to step forward and help in one form or another. However, I also understand that there are obstacles they also face, (being) between the hammer and the So it’s about trying to understand how we model the business in a way that it’s mutually beneficial for student-athletes, schools, but also mental health professionals who also work with our athletes.”

Lisa J. SmithSt. Paul

Founder, CEO, Smith Co.

“As a startup and as an entrepreneur, I have the ability in the Twin Cities to have a platform, especially as a women-led organization, to talk about what I’m doing and trying to spread my message as a business to get new people I’m also here to connect with the ecosystem of entrepreneurship in cities, which was much bigger than I could have ever imagined. is pretty amazing… I’m looking for more innovation and a better understanding of how to connect to potential investors in the future if I want to scale I’m really interested in understanding this better but since I’m not a technology-focused company and looking at entrepreneurship from a service perspective, I hope I can connect with others who are interested in it as well.”
